Kaya’s Pursuit (Podcast)

Creator: Marta Kasztelan
Poland / UK

After three decades of silence, a young woman opens up about the man who changed her life forever, but getting justice is proving more difficult than she had anticipated.

Balkan Watchers 2024

37-year-old Kaya had her first panic attack when she was a teen. Since then the bubbly set designer from Poland, who now lives in the UK, has been struggling with mental health, ascribing it to strained family relations. That was until a recent conversation with her London friend triggered memories of the man who changed Kaya’s life forever. Pawel, a young man who took Kaya and her brother to summer and winter camps – and befriended Kaya’s family – abused her between the ages of seven and twelve. This realisation and the support she’s received from her London friends sets Kaya off on an investigative journey to find her abuser and bring him to justice. After days of digging…to her horror, she learns that Pawel – who has since changed his last name – still runs camps for children. In an effort to stop him, she launches a complaint with the prosecutor’s office and with Poland’s pedophilia commission. Convinced she couldn’t be the only one, Kaya also looks for and finds others Pawel had hurt. But she quickly learns that securing justice and a peace of mind will be more difficult than she had imagined. And just when she thinks she had turned a corner, she receives the message she feared the most: Pawel had just passed away. This turns Kaya’s life upside down. What will she do? Will Kaya ever get justice or closure?
